I heard someone say recently that when things feel wrong in your life it’s because what you’re doing doesn’t align with what you’re feeling. This hit such a nerve I had to repeat it to someone. It’s so absolutely true and I realise now that I had this feeling a LOT in early 2018.
As I’ve said before, I cut way back on the drinking, I’d stopped smoking and started being healthier in general. I watched what I ate a bit more and started exercising a lot and I felt so good inside. The only problem was that when I went to work, I felt like the miserable, depressed alcoholic I’d been a few years before. I wasn’t very nice to people and was continually frustrated with the way things worked (or didn’t). I can remember saying to a couple of people that it was really quite annoying that I was so happy outside of work but I went there and my mood was automatically lowered.
Funnily enough, this is when I started looking elsewhere for another way to earn money. That’s when I came across coaching and now I cannot tell you how excited I am to start coaching full time. I’m two weeks away from finishing my job and I fully expected to be feeling a bit unnerved and wondering whether I’m doing the right thing. There is a tiny little bit of that but on the whole I can’t wait!!
The feeling that something is wrong is telling you that there is discord in your life that needs to be sorted out. It needs to be addressed and it needs to be addressed right now. You will continue to feel this and it will only get worse if you don’t sort it out. You may not need to change your career or even your job. It may be that you just need to stop trying to be all things to all people (this doesn’t work for anyone by the way).
No-one is perfect and no two people are the same yet we’re expected to look/feel/behave the same way. And whilst I’m not saying that we should all run around naked setting fire to buildings in a bid to destabilise the patriarchy, there are ways to be a bit more you. Sick of needing a self-tan every week? Don’t do it! Can’t be arsed to shave your legs? Who cares?!
In reality, you have to spend 100% of your time with yourself so wouldn’t it be a bit easier if things were a bit more in sync?
